FIND YOUR BASE
Where should you stay?
Choose a base in Arusha if your safari pickup starts here. A simple city stay can be practical before departure; a lodge suits those wanting more time in green surroundings. Check the starting point, as trips to Materuni may also depart from Moshi.

Using Arusha as a base: choose the park first
Arusha is both a town and a safari starting point. Arusha National Park, Tarangire and a longer Serengeti route are different experiences with different transport needs. An attractive safari photograph does not tell you which park is on your ticket.
What does Arusha National Park offer?
The park combines forest, lakes and open areas around Mount Meru. Giraffes, buffalo and colobus monkeys are among the animals associated with the area, although sightings are never guaranteed. Walking safaris and canoe outings are guided activities requiring arrangements. Check the precise inclusions rather than assuming every activity is part of the tour.
A base for arrival and onward safari
Consider the centre for town facilities or research Usa River and the Momella area when they suit your programme. Confirm pickup and transfer times with the operator. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Arusha Airport (ARK) are different airports; provide the correct name and flight number when arranging transport.
What belongs in the budget?
Ask for a breakdown of park fees, vehicle and driver, guiding, meals and transfers. Fees vary by activity and visitor category. Compare the same park, duration and party size, and keep arrival day simple before an early safari.
Take a full-day trip to Materuni Waterfall and a Chagga village, combining nature with local coffee traditions. Materuni is near Moshi, so check that the departure point and transport fit your stay in Arusha.
Set aside several days to explore Tanzania's natural landscapes on a five-day safari. Compare the parks visited, accommodation and departure point with your wider plans; wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Explore Arusha on foot on a tour focused on local communities and street food. This combination of walking and food offers a glimpse of everyday life beyond the classic safari experiences.
June鈥揙ctober is a common starting point for a dry-season safari. Choose the park and area individually; wildlife and migration do not follow a fixed calendar.
