Maldives

The Maldives invites long days by the sea, snorkelling and stays where the island is a central part of the experience.

WHEN SHOULD YOU TRAVEL?

When to visit

January–March is usually the driest period. December and April are transition months and popular for beach holidays; rain can occur throughout the year.

Choose a month to see what might suit your trip. This advice reflects typical conditions; check your region and dates before booking.

Maldives weather: choose the season before the island

The Maldives Meteorological Service identifies January–March as the dry northeast monsoon, mid-May–November as the wetter southwest monsoon, and December and April as transition months. Rain can occur throughout the year, with conditions varying between atolls.

For a beach-focused trip, use January–March as a starting point, then compare the exact island, transfer and room terms. For other months, keep boat outings flexible and ask about weather cancellations.

Experiences to look forward to

01

Snorkelling around the island

Choose an island with access to a house reef if you want to snorkel without booking a boat trip every time.

02

Time on the water

Look into kayaking or a sunset boat trip. Excursions depend on the weather and sea conditions.

03

Unhurried island life

Keep some days completely free. One island can be plenty when beaches, the sea and peace are the purpose.

Resort or local island: decide this first

A Maldives holiday starts with choosing the kind of island stay you want. Compare the whole trip, including transfers and meals, before comparing room photographs. A lower nightly room rate can be offset by transport or a meal plan that does not suit you.

A resort for staying in one place

Choose this approach if you want accommodation, meals and most activities organised around one property. Look beyond the villa category: ask about beach access, swimming conditions, shade and how you reach snorkelling spots. An overwater villa does not by itself tell you whether the reef or beach will suit your needs.

A guesthouse for a local-island base

Start with our Maafushi guide if you want to compare guesthouses and boat excursions. Ask the property which beach visitors use, which activities depart locally and what is included in the room price. Confirm local dress and swimming rules with your host before travelling.

Malé for a city stop and connections

Read the Malé guide if you are considering a short city stay around your flights. Treat it as a different experience from a resort island. Check where your onward transfer leaves and how long it takes to reach that departure point from the accommodation.

Arrange the island transfer before the room becomes non-refundable

Send your international flight details to the accommodation and ask for the available transfer, its full return price and baggage conditions. Get written confirmation of the latest flight arrival they can connect with and what happens if your international flight is delayed.

Trans Maldivian Airways states that its seaplanes operate from sunrise to sunset. A late arrival can therefore change your first-night plans. Do not assume a transfer is possible just because a room is available. Use the operator’s FAQ and your accommodation’s instructions to plan the connection.

If a property offers a speedboat connection, ask whether it is shared or private, how its schedule aligns with your flight and whether the quoted price covers both directions. For a stay on more than one island, confirm the route between them before booking either room. Two islands that look close on a map are not proof of a direct connection.

How to compare the total holiday cost

Use the same dates, number of travellers and meal basis for every quote. Your comparison should include accommodation, international flights, return island transfers, compulsory taxes or service charges, meals not covered by the plan and the excursions you actually want.

An example calculation: a room quote of $120 per night for seven nights is $840. If your separate quotes are $200 for return transfers for two and $350 for meals, the subtotal is $1,390 before flights, excursions and any excluded charges. These figures demonstrate the calculation only; they are not live offers or average Maldives prices.

Compare meal plans by your habits

Ask exactly which restaurants, drinks and meals a plan covers. If you expect to spend several days on excursions, check whether you would be paying twice for lunch. Conversely, a room-only quote is difficult to compare without knowing the cost and availability of meals at your chosen base.

Budget for the activities that matter

Choose one or two priorities, such as a guided snorkelling trip or a boat excursion, and request the full price including equipment and transport. Ask how weather cancellations are handled. Wildlife sightings cannot be promised, so choose a trip for the experience and responsible operating practices rather than a guaranteed encounter.

A simple seven-night plan

For a first stay, one island keeps the planning manageable. Use the arrival day to settle in and learn about swimming access. Keep the next day flexible, then place your main excursion early enough in the stay to leave room for a weather-related change. Leave some days without bookings and reconfirm your departure transfer before the final evening.

If you prefer a city-and-island combination, consider a short Malé stop and a longer island stay. Confirm the connections first. For seasonal comparisons with other destinations, see where to travel for warmth in November and use the month selector above for our Maldives overview.

Questions before booking the Maldives

Is a transfer included in the room price?

Do not assume so. Check the booking terms and request a total for your party, including both directions and any compulsory charges.

Should I stay on more than one island?

Choose a second island only if it adds something important to the trip. Allow for packing, check-out, waiting and transport; the move can take up a meaningful part of a holiday day.

Can I plan snorkelling straight from the beach?

Ask about the exact reef access, local currents, supervision and your swimming ability. A turquoise lagoon in a photograph is not enough information to plan a snorkelling holiday.
