A large island with room for city life, beaches and day trips. Choose one part of the island as your base.

FIND YOUR BASE
Choose Chania or Rethymno for old towns and dining, or a beach stay if the sea is your priority. A small apartment and a hotel with more facilities offer different ways to travel. Keep excursions within the same part of the island so transport does not dominate your holiday.
There is no single opening date for the sea. Our planning advice is to prioritise summer and early autumn if swimming is the main purpose of your trip. May and October require more flexibility: water, wind and local conditions determine whether a beach day suits you. Air temperature is not sea temperature.
Choose a base that works without swimming. Keep a town walk or cultural visit as an alternative and check whether boat excursions operate on your dates.
Base yourself near the beaches you actually want to use. Keep long outings separate from your main beach days and consider heat, wind and shade.
Choose a stay that also works for food, town life and sightseeing. Ask about operating facilities and boat trips; a hotel pool may be unheated.

Consider Chania for a stay focused on the west, checking transport to Kissamos for the Balos trip. If Knossos is your priority, compare a base near Heraklion against the journey from a western hotel. Avoid spending the holiday crossing the island for short visits.
Add flights, nights, meals, transport and one or two priority outings. Check parking, pickups, admission and cancellation terms. A low room rate may be offset by repeated long journeys.
