Northern lights in Lapland: plan your aurora hunt
Green ribbons above a quiet forest or a glass igloo beneath a purple sky can inspire a whole journey. A good itinerary still works when the clouds stay. This guide separates the season, the conditions on the night and the tour you actually book.

When can you see the northern lights in Lapland?
Auroras need darkness. Late August to early April is a relevant season in Finnish Lapland, but the date alone does not determine a sighting. Clouds and activity in the atmosphere matter too. Bright summer nights do not suit the same kind of aurora trip.
Choose according to the rest of your holiday: autumn for dark evenings without necessarily having snow, winter for short days and snowy activities, or late winter for more daylight between nights. Sled activities and auroras have different requirements. Several nights offer flexibility, without a guarantee.
Rovaniemi, Levi or Inari?
Rovaniemi works for a first visit combining the Christmas village, restaurants and excursions. Levi suits a holiday with skiing and winter activities. Inari and Saariselkä provide different settings further north. Choose a base for its daytime appeal and transport as well as its nights.
A Rovaniemi departure is not a local outing from Levi. Check the departure town and pickup area. A remote hotel may still require a transfer to the tour meeting point.
A guided hunt or an independent evening?
A guide can arrange transport and choose viewing locations for the conditions. The selected Rovaniemi tour includes photography and is listed at around six hours. Check your option, group size, pickup, clothing and actual departure. Allow a long evening in your plan.

Explore the Rovaniemi aurora huntIndependently, you must arrange a safe, legal viewing location and return transport. Avoid roadsides and unfamiliar lake ice. Choose local guidance if you lack experience navigating in darkness or travelling in winter conditions.
Why do auroras look different on social media?
A camera using a longer exposure can capture colours and details that look fainter to the eye. An edited video or striking photograph does not promise the same view on a random evening. Weak auroras can be subtle, while strong displays may be vivid.
Ask whether tour photographs are included, how they are delivered and whether you can take your own. Try your camera’s night mode before travelling, but allow time to enjoy the sky without a screen. A glass igloo cannot remove cloud, and nearby hotel lighting may affect the view.
A flexible evening outline
- Eat and prepare warm clothing before departure. Use the booking confirmation for the meeting time and place.
- Keep the evening free for the outing and driving. Avoid restaurant bookings based on an assumed return time.
- Leave the next morning easy. Include worthwhile daytime experiences so the trip does not depend on one night.
This is your own itinerary rather than a package arranged by Asili Journeys. Save confirmed times and references in the trip planner, keeping suggested activities separate from confirmed bookings.
What does an “aurora guarantee” mean?
An operator may offer another outing or a refund under particular conditions. That is a product policy, not a guarantee of a natural phenomenon. Read what counts as a sighting, when another trip can be taken and whether extra nights are needed.
Asili Journeys does not promise sightings or claim personal participation in the tour. Consult the Finnish Meteorological Institute for conditions and the provider for current terms, prices and departures.
