Rovaniemi: Santa Claus Village and SantaPark

Snow-covered wooden houses, lights among the fir trees and a postcard from the Arctic Circle: Rovaniemi is a practical starting point for a Lapland trip inspired by winter photographs and videos. The village, the underground park and the town centre are separate places. This guide helps you choose the right visit.

Santa Claus Village: Christmas outdoors

Santa Claus Village is around eight kilometres north of central Rovaniemi. Walk between wooden buildings and shops, visit the main post office and cross the marked Arctic Circle. There is no general entrance charge for the village. Activities, food, accommodation and extras are paid separately, so a package tour is not required simply to enter.

Choose two or three priorities and leave time to explore. Reindeer rides, husky outings and meeting Santa may have separate queues, tickets and meeting points. An atmospheric evening walk and an animal experience are not necessarily part of the same booking.

SantaPark: a separate underground attraction

SantaPark is an indoor Christmas park below ground, around seven kilometres from the town centre. It is different from Santa Claus Village. Attractions include Elf School, a train and Christmas entertainment. Choose it when the Christmas setting itself is the main attraction, and check exactly what the ticket includes.

The park opens seasonally. Consult the official calendar for your dates before booking flights or admission. A SantaPark ticket does not automatically include transport or activities in Santa Claus Village.

Where should you stay in Rovaniemi?

The town centre is convenient for restaurants and shops, with transport needed for village visits. Santa Claus Village puts the festive surroundings close to your accommodation. A cabin or glass igloo outside town offers a different setting, but compare meals, transfers and tour pickup coverage before booking.

A beautiful hotel may be inconvenient for your activities. Compare the total cost of the stay, including food and transport, and establish whether pickups are at your door or a central meeting point.

A day with the village, reindeer and huskies

The selected combination tour from Rovaniemi includes reindeer and husky visits, short sled rides and time in Santa Claus Village. The product describes rides of around 500 metres with each animal: a brief introduction rather than a long wilderness safari. Check your selected option, transfers and snow conditions.

If you book the combination, avoid paying for another short husky ride by accident. Choose a separate, longer outing when travelling through the forest is the main reason for your trip.

A simple plan for two full days

  1. Day 1: Spend daylight in Santa Claus Village or choose the combination tour. Allow time for a meal and keep the evening flexible.
  2. Day 2: Visit SantaPark when open, or choose a separate winter activity. Keep another evening available for an aurora hunt.

This is an outline to adapt, not a booked programme. Avoid a long night tour before an early start. Add confirmed meeting times to the trip planner rather than relying on a generic time in a guide.

Transport and easily missed costs

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is the relevant starting point. Check current buses or transfers between the centre, SantaPark and Santa Claus Village; these are separate locations. Plan taxi pickups and return journeys in advance. Allow for winter clothing, meals, optional photographs and any transport not specifically included.

With children, check each activity鈥檚 age restrictions and opportunities for warm indoor breaks. An indoor ticket and an outdoor sled ride have different clothing and pacing requirements.
