YOUR TRIP AT A GLANCE

Which Lapland experience are you dreaming of?

Finnish Lapland suits travellers who want dark evenings, Arctic landscapes and unhurried days. Choose Rovaniemi for a practical town base and guided tours, Levi for a mix of skiing and winter activities, or Inari and Saariselkä for a stay further north. Lapland is a region rather than a country; this guide covers the Finnish part.

Allow several evenings instead of making the whole trip depend on one outing. Auroras need darkness, sufficiently clear skies and activity in the atmosphere. A guided tour or a glass-roofed room cannot guarantee a sighting.

When is the best time to visit Lapland?

The northern lights season runs from late August into early April. Snow-based activities have their own season: a dark September night can offer aurora viewing without the conditions for a snowy winter holiday. Decide which experience matters most before choosing your dates.

September–October: dark autumn evenings

A choice for autumn landscapes and auroras. Plan activities that do not depend on snow. The timing of autumn colours varies by location and year.

November–January: winter atmosphere

Short days create a different rhythm. Use daylight for outings and keep evenings flexible. Research Christmas accommodation, transport and tours early; neither snow nor auroras can be promised on a particular date.

Rovaniemi, Levi or Inari: choose your base

Rovaniemi: a practical first visit

Stay centrally for restaurants and walkable parts of town. A property outside town may offer more peace, but needs a clear transport and tour-pickup plan.

Levi and Ylläs: active winter days

Choose accommodation close to the activities you will use. This is a different trip from a town break in Rovaniemi. Kittilä is the relevant airport for Levi and Ylläs.

Plan a stay in Levi and Ylläs →

Inari and Saariselkä: further north

Consider these areas for landscapes and a slower stay, using Ivalo Airport. Siida in Inari provides insight into Sámi culture. Sápmi crosses national borders; choose respectful, locally informed cultural interpretation.

Compare meals, sauna access, distance from town and pickup coverage when choosing between a glass igloo, cabin and town hotel. A glass roof can make a stay special but does not ensure auroras.

Levi and Ylläs: a practical planning guide

Start with Kittilä Airport and one accommodation base. Decide whether skiing or other winter activities should shape your days, then compare the journey from the property to each meeting point. Keep arrival and departure days flexible, and confirm transfers for your exact flight.

For each activity, check departure town, pickup coverage, clothing and snow requirements. The Rovaniemi experiences elsewhere on this page are not local departures from Levi or Ylläs. Do not book one without a separate, realistic transport plan.

Inari and Saariselkä: plan a stay further north

Start with Ivalo Airport and compare the accommodation location against your main interests. Allow a separate part of the day for transfers and keep aurora evenings flexible. If visiting Siida in Inari, check its opening times for your date before planning the rest of the day.

Ask the accommodation which activities actually depart nearby and whether transfers are included. Our Rovaniemi tour buttons should not be treated as activities with pickup from Inari. Use the aurora planning guide for the general viewing checklist; its specific tour departs from Rovaniemi.

AN EVENING UNDER THE ARCTIC SKY

Northern lights photography hunt from Rovaniemi

The selected GetYourGuide experience is a guided aurora hunt with photography from Rovaniemi. Viewing locations depend on conditions that evening. The provider lists transport, pickups and included equipment on the booking page. The activity is listed at around six hours; check your chosen option and exact departure time.

Allow a long evening and an easy following morning. Check minimum age, group size, clothing, pickup location and cancellation conditions. This is a travel idea, not a review based on personal participation.

Auroras are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. Any rebooking or refund promises belong to the provider; read the applicable terms.

A DISTINCTIVE STAY

Glass igloo, forest cabin or hotel?

Glass roofs and snowy cabins look beautiful in photographs, but location, meals and pickups determine whether the stay works. A view cannot guarantee auroras.

A practical outline for three nights

  1. Arrival: Settle into your base, collect any hired winter clothing and keep the first evening simple.
  2. First full day: Choose the village or a reindeer/husky activity in daylight and keep the evening available for auroras. Avoid tightly timed bookings.
  3. Second full day: Choose SantaPark when open, a sauna or a standalone husky outing that does not duplicate the previous day. Keep another evening available if the weather changes.
  4. Departure: Allow time for transfers and winter conditions. Avoid a long excursion just before your flight.

This is a planning outline rather than an organised trip. Keep your own flights, bookings and appointments in the trip planner.

Budget for the complete stay

Start with flights and transfers, then add accommodation, meals, winter equipment and paid activities. A self-catering town hotel and a glass igloo with meals included are not comparable on room price alone. Check whether tours include clothing and pickups; budget for them separately if they do not.

Compare the same dates, party size and meals. We do not display a fixed holiday price: Asili Journeys does not sell a combined package, and providers’ prices change.

Flights and local transport

Match your airport to your base: Rovaniemi (RVN), Kittilä (KTT) for Levi and Ylläs, or Ivalo (IVL) for Inari and Saariselkä. Helsinki can provide an onward connection north. Check direct and seasonal routes for your own dates.

In Rovaniemi, local buses and airport services may be useful. Check current timetables and the distance from the stop to your accommodation. A remote cabin may need a taxi or prearranged transfer. Match winter driving to your experience.

Questions before booking

Can I see the northern lights every night?

No. Clear, dark skies improve the conditions, but do not promise a sighting. Choose a trip you would still enjoy on a cloudy evening.

Does Lapland work for a short break?

Yes, with one base and realistic travel days. More nights offer more possible evenings, without making sightings certain.

What should I pack?

Layers, warm boots, a hat and gloves. Ask what the operator supplies and follow local advice on cold and terrain. Do not venture onto lake ice without qualified local guidance.

What about entry rules and safety?

Finland uses the euro. Check entry rules for your nationality and current official travel advice. Danish travellers can consult the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
