The pyramids of Giza viewed from the desert

AREA GUIDE · EGYPT

Cairo

Cairo deserves more than a quick stop at the pyramids. Divide your stay into manageable days for Giza, the museum and historic neighbourhoods, with room for traffic and breaks.

FIND YOUR BASE

Choose your base in Cairo

Giza suits the pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum. Downtown and Zamalek offer a different base for city life. Allow for traffic when choosing a hotel.

When to visit Cairo

October–April is our starting point for a sightseeing-focused visit. WMO climate averages for Cairo show daily highs of 24.7°C in November and 19.0°C in January, compared with roughly 35°C in July. Winter evenings call for an extra layer.

Schedule outdoor visits early, particularly in warmer months. Use a museum day to balance Giza, where shade may not follow your route. A packed programme is not better simply because it names more sights; choose one main experience per day.

Where to stay: Cairo or Giza?

Giza is relevant when the pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum are your priorities. Check the exact hotel location, direction of the advertised view and transport to entrances. A room marketed with pyramid views is not necessarily near the entrance you will use.

Downtown around Tahrir is a base for central Cairo and the Egyptian Museum. Compare Zamalek for cafés and restaurants on Gezira Island. Both require planned transport to Giza. Choose according to each day’s geography rather than straight-line distance.

Ask about road noise, lifts, air conditioning and late arrival. For a short stay, a simple, well-positioned hotel can offer more value than a larger property far from your route. For extra comfort, we would prioritise a quiet room and convenient pickup over a long list of facilities.

What should you see in Cairo?

Giza’s pyramids and the Sphinx: allow an unhurried morning and clarify whether your ticket covers the plateau or entry inside a pyramid too. A guided visit can add historical context, but read the ticket options before paying.

Grand Egyptian Museum, GEM: plan it as an experience in its own right. Use the museum’s official ticketing website for current admission terms and dates. GEM is not the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. If a tour simply says “Egyptian Museum”, confirm which museum it visits.

Khan el-Khalili and historic Cairo: allow time for streets, stalls and pauses instead of treating the market as a quick photo stop. Agree on a clear meeting point with your driver. Mosque visits require respect for local rules and any access restrictions.

Three days without rushing every stop

Day one: Giza in the morning and a quieter afternoon. Do not add distant stops just because they fit into a tour description. Day two: the Grand Egyptian Museum, with time for the collections that interest you. Day three: historic neighbourhoods and Khan el-Khalili, allowing a meal and breaks along the way.

This is a suggestion for pacing, not a fixed itinerary or package. If continuing to Hurghada or Sharm, allow a separate travel day. Compare flights, baggage rules and transfers at both ends, not just the time in the air.

Budgeting for three days in Cairo

An editorial example for two sharing a room assigns DKK 250 per person per night to a hotel, DKK 150 per day to food and DKK 150 to transport and incidentals. Three nights and three daily allowances total DKK 1,650 per person, or DKK 3,300 for two, before flights, visas, insurance, airport transfers, museum admission and guided tours.

These are our assumptions, not live quotes. Substitute actual ticket and accommodation prices and add extra arrival or departure days. For tours, ask whether admission, lunch and transport are included in your specific option. The “from” price may refer to a different version.

Transport and practical advice

Allow a generous buffer between neighbourhoods and for airport journeys. Denmark’s travel advice recommends prearranged taxis in good condition or well-known ride services. Confirm the correct hotel, meeting point and full price rather than accepting unsolicited offers.

Keep small denominations for small purchases and agree prices before a service starts. The currency is the Egyptian pound, EGP; check the current exchange rate and card fees instead of relying on an old conversion. Read the Egypt guide’s visa and safety information before booking and again close to departure.

Questions about Cairo

Is GEM the same as the Egyptian Museum?

No. GEM is near Giza, while the Egyptian Museum is at Tahrir. Check the full museum name on your ticket and itinerary.

Are three days enough in Cairo?

Three days can accommodate Giza, GEM and a historic neighbourhood if you prioritise and allow for transport. Arrival and departure may require extra time.

Can you visit the pyramids without a guide?

You can arrange transport and tickets yourself. A guide is an optional choice for interpretation and logistics; always check which admission tickets are included.
