DECEMBER · BEACHES, ISLANDS AND MILDER CITY DAYS

Where is hot in December?

Would you rather spend December on a tropical beach, take a snorkelling trip or explore a city in milder daytime weather? Temperature is only part of the decision. The trip also needs to suit your available time, total budget and the experiences you want.

We compare five options: Phuket, Hurghada, the Maldives, Tenerife and Marrakech. The guide includes beach destinations and a milder city-break alternative, with the practical questions worth settling before you book.

Temperatures are rounded historical averages of the daily maximum and minimum, not a forecast or guarantee. The Maldives entry is a seasonal assessment, not a directly comparable temperature figure. Stations and reference periods differ, so small numerical differences should not decide the trip alone. These figures describe air temperature, not sea temperature.

Phuket: choose your base before your hotel

Start with Phuket if warm air and beaches are central to your plans. The WMO climate record shows lower average rainfall in December than November, although rain can still affect a day. Leave room to move an important boat excursion instead of scheduling it immediately before your flight home. [1]

The Phuket guide compares Kata, Karon, Patong and Old Town. Decide whether walking to a beach, nearby restaurants or time in town matters most. An attractive hotel address is not necessarily the most convenient one for your excursions.

For a simple week, let the arrival day stay flexible, then spread beach time, a food experience and an optional boat trip across different days. You do not need to reserve an activity for every day.

For a city-and-beach combination, read the Thailand guide and Bangkok guide. Count the journey between bases as part of your holiday.

Hurghada: choose the hotel around the beach holiday

Hurghada is an option for milder December days and access to the Red Sea. Its historical temperatures are cooler than Phuket's, particularly at night. Bring a layer for the evening and check wind and sea conditions before an excursion. [2]

When comparing accommodation, investigate actual beach access and the swimming area. If a heated pool matters to your trip, ask whether it will be heated during your specific dates rather than assuming this from summer photographs.

Use the Hurghada guide to compare bases and excursions. To consider a different Egyptian holiday, continue to Egypt, Sharm el-Sheikh or Cairo.

Ad — GetYourGuide: An Orange Bay snorkelling cruise can be one of your excursion days. Check the option carefully: transfers, equipment and additional charges may vary with what you select.

Maldives: match the island to your arrival and transfer

The Maldives is warm throughout the year, but the national meteorological service describes December as a monsoon transition. It normally places the northeast monsoon's dry season in January–March. Rain remains possible in December, with conditions varying between atolls. [3]

For December 2026: The official outlook published on 17 October indicates an increased likelihood of above-normal rainfall during October–December. This covers a whole season, not the weather on your particular travel dates. [6]

Choose between a local island and a resort before assessing the transfer. Compare its total price, transport type, baggage rules, last departure and compatibility with your flight arrival. Lower accommodation costs can lose their advantage if transport or an extra overnight stay has been omitted.

Start with the Maldives guide. The Maafushi guide is useful for a local island and excursions, while the Malé guide helps with a possible city stop. Do not book an excursion departing from Maafushi while staying on another island without first arranging the journey.

Tenerife: a mild break with more than beach time

The southern airport station records a historical December average maximum of approximately 23 °C. That makes Tenerife a milder option than the tropical destinations here. The figure does not describe every hour, coastline or altitude on the island. [4]

Consider Tenerife if outings, walks and pool time matter as much as beach days. Investigate your base and expectations about swimming: warm sea temperatures cannot be inferred from air temperatures.

Asili Journeys does not yet have a dedicated Tenerife guide. The Spain page provides a country overview; the Mallorca and Barcelona guides describe different places and should not be used as Tenerife guides. We therefore do not link an experience on another island as a Tenerife recommendation.

Marrakech: a milder city break, not tropical winter heat

Marrakech is an alternative if city experiences appeal more than swimming. There is a marked gap between its average December daytime maximum and nighttime minimum. Choose accommodation for evening comfort as well as its courtyard photographs. [5]

For a short stay, group visits into manageable areas: a day for the medina and food, a day around your preferred cultural sights, and time to pause. Check the exact meeting points and opening arrangements for your dates before fixing the programme.

Read the Marrakech guide and the Morocco guide if you are considering a longer trip.

Ad — Viator: A guided food walk can give structure to an evening. Check its meeting point, language and whether the provider can accommodate your dietary requirements.

Beach or city: decide what matters most

If the beach is essential, look beyond the day's highest temperature. Investigate wind, waves, beach access and alternatives when the sea does not suit your plans. Ask about pool heating if it is a deciding factor.

On a city break, location, walking distances and a comfortable evening plan may deserve more attention. Marrakech and Phuket offer different holidays even though both can make sense in December.

Our editorial assessment: Start with Phuket for a tropical beach holiday. Investigate the Maldives when the island stay itself is the main experience. Compare Hurghada and southern Tenerife if milder warmth is sufficient. Choose Marrakech for its city life rather than the expectation of a hot beach.

What does a December holiday cost?

There is no single reliable December price for an entire destination. Compare the same dates, party size, room terms and baggage allowance. Price an earlier December week alongside your preferred Christmas dates before deciding.

Build the total in five parts:

  1. Flights with the baggage and seat choices you need.
  2. Accommodation including taxes, fees and your preferred meals.
  3. Airport and island transfers.
  4. Food and local transport not already included.
  5. Experiences and an allowance for changes.

A fictional calculation, not a destination quote: Two people share a room costing DKK 800 per night for seven nights: DKK 2,800 each. Adding an assumed DKK 1,750 for food and local transport and DKK 1,000 for experiences gives DKK 5,550 per person before flights, transfers and any other expenses. Replace every amount with quotes for your own dates. This is neither a bookable holiday nor a price estimate for the destinations compared.

Save useful guides and organise the days in the trip planner. Bookings are made with external partners. Asili Journeys is a travel inspiration platform and does not sell this itinerary as a package holiday.

Questions about December travel

Where in Europe is warm in December?

Southern Tenerife is a mild option, with an average December maximum of around 23 °C at the airport station. The island lies geographically off Africa and is part of Spain. Expect a different holiday from tropical beach heat. [4]

Where should we go for a December beach holiday?

Phuket and the Maldives are worth investigating if tropical warmth is important. Choose a specific base and dates, and check weather flexibility and transport to the beach or island you want. December is a monsoon transition in the Maldives. [1] [3]

Is Hurghada warm enough in December?

That depends on your expectations. Historical averages are about 23 °C for the daytime maximum and 13 °C for the nighttime minimum. This may suit a mild break but is not tropical heat. Check wind, sea conditions and the hotel's pool too. [2]

Is Marrakech good for a December beach holiday?

We would choose Marrakech for food, culture and city life. Its average December maximum is approximately 20 °C, with a minimum of around 7 °C. A pool-focused stay therefore needs a deliberate accommodation choice. [5]

Is sunshine guaranteed in December?

No. Climate averages describe past conditions and seasonal outlooks describe probabilities. They can inform a destination choice but cannot guarantee the weather during your stay.

Should we choose November or December?

Compare your actual dates and priorities. Read the November destination comparison, but consider each destination's December conditions rather than simply switching the month name.
